The Groote Post Homestead was built in 1808 in the untouched lands of Darling within the Western Cape. Its name was derived from its original status as the largest guarding post in the area, set up to protect cattle from local Hottentot stock thieves.
Since its purchase in 1972 the estate further added the adjoinng farm, which now totals some 3 000 hectares of farm land. The vineyards are all situated on the south-facing upper slopes on the Kapokberg overlooking the icy Atlantic Ocean some 200-450m above sea level – this gives their grapes very unique characteristics.
Lukas Wentzel, Groote Post’s winemaker is the magician behind the lands very own Cap Classique – Aurelia – a personal tribute to his family matriach.
